Abes Modelkarriere begann während seiner Studienzeit. Durch den Gewinn des „Shueisha 3rd Nonno Boyfriend Award“ im Jahr 1985 festigte er sein Image als charismatisches Model und erschien exklusiv für die Zeitschriften „Nonno“ und „Men's Nonno“. In seinem letzten Studienjahr gab Abe sein Schauspieldebüt mit dem Film „Haikara-san ga Toru“. Seine erste Hauptrolle in einem TV-Drama bekam er 1990. Der Durchbruch gelang Abe 1994, als er für „Kyoju Luger P08“ und ein weiteres Werk den japanischen Spezialpreis für professionelle Filme gewann. In seiner 30-jährigen Karriere hat Abe in vielen Serien und Filmen mitgespielt. Zu den bemerkenswertesten Werken zählen die Serien „TRICK“, „Dragon Zakura“, „Kekkon Dekinai Otoko“, „Shinzanmono“ und „Thermae Romae“. mehrere Werke unter der Regie von Koreeda Hirokazu – „Still Working“ und „After the Storm“.
Im Jahr 2009 gewann Abe den Preis als Bester Schauspieler beim 63. Mainichi Film Award für seine Leistungen in „Still Walking“ und „Aoi Tori“. Außerdem gewann er zweimal den Japan Academy Film Prize als bester Hauptdarsteller – bei der 36. Ausgabe für „Thermae Romae“ und bei der 38. Ausgabe für „Cape Nostalgia“. 2012 gewann er den Blue Ribbon Award als Bester Schauspieler für seine Auftritte in „Kirin no Tsubasa“, „Thermae Romae“ und „By Rule of Crow's Thumb“. Abe gewann außerdem insgesamt sechs Mal den Television Drama Academy Award – viermal als Bester Hauptdarsteller und zweimal als Bester Nebendarsteller.
In seinem Privatleben blieb er über 40 hinaus Single, was ihn zum Synonym für die Figur, die er spielte, Kuwano Shinsuke, aus „Kekkon Dekinai Otoko“, machte. Am 20. November 2007 hielt Abe eine Pressekonferenz bei TV Asahi ab, um seine Verlobung bekannt zu geben. Seine Verlobte ist eine Bürodame (damals 28) und 15 Jahre jünger als er. Er erklärte sogar: „Der Mann, der nicht heiraten kann, heiratet!“ (bezogen auf Kuwano Shinsuke) während der Pressekonferenz. Abe und seine Verlobte haben ihre Ehe im Februar 2008 eingetragen.
