Unter dem Namen „DJ Vesper MJ“ ist Kim seit 2009 auch als Club-DJ aktiv.
Am 20. Dezember 2012 gab Kim auf Twitter bekannt, dass er eine vorübergehende Pause von der Schauspielerei einlegen werde. Drei Monate später kehrte er in die Unterhaltungsszene zurück, als ihn der Schauspieler Park Joong Hoon für sein Regiedebüt „Top Star“ besetzte.
Ende 2013 nahm er an der Reality-/Varietéshow I Live Alone und dem multikulturellen Kinderreisebericht Coo Coo Class teil.
Er und die Modedesignerin Dami Kwon (die Schwester von BIGBANGs G-Dragon) heirateten im Oktober 2019 und gaben im November 2021 ihre Schwangerschaft bekannt. Ihr kleiner Junge wurde am 4. Februar 2022 geboren
